Oklahoma Sooners QB makes big impression on new offensive coordinator

The Oklahoma Sooners are undergoing significant changes in their football program, particularly within the offensive unit. Head coach Brent Venables recently appointed Ben Arbuckle as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, following Arbuckle’s successful tenure at Washington State University.

Arbuckle’s arrival coincides with a pivotal moment for the Sooners’ quarterback lineup. Sophomore quarterback Jackson Arnold, who began the season as the starter, has entered the transfer portal. Arnold’s departure opens the door for other talents to step up, notably true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. Hawkins, a four-star recruit, was initially the backup but took over the starting role after Arnold’s inconsistent performances early in the season. His dual-threat capabilities and composure have been evident, particularly during his relief appearance against Tennessee, where he threw for 132 yards and a touchdown.

The transition hasn’t been without challenges. Hawkins has had to adapt to the evolving offensive strategies resulting from coaching changes. He acknowledged the difficulties of constant changes at the offensive coordinator position but remains focused on improving his game and building chemistry with his teammates.

Arbuckle’s offensive philosophy emphasizes a dynamic and high-scoring approach, as demonstrated by his previous teams’ performances. At Washington State, his offense ranked 12th nationally, averaging 36.8 points per game. His system is expected to leverage Hawkins’ athleticism and versatility, potentially elevating the Sooners’ offensive production.

In addition to Hawkins, the Sooners have secured a commitment from transfer quarterback John Mateer, who previously played under Arbuckle at Washington State. Mateer’s familiarity with Arbuckle’s system could provide valuable depth and competition in the quarterback room, fostering a healthy environment for growth and development.

The upcoming season presents an opportunity for the Sooners to revitalize their offense under Arbuckle’s guidance. With Hawkins at the helm and the infusion of new talent, Oklahoma aims to reestablish itself as a formidable force in college football. The collaboration between Arbuckle and Hawkins will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead and achieving the program’s goals.

As the team prepares for the next season, the focus will be on integrating Arbuckle’s offensive schemes, enhancing player performance, and building a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level. The synergy between the coaching staff and players, particularly the quarterbacks, will play a significant role in the Sooners’ pursuit of success in the evolving landscape of college football.
