The Boston Red Sox are reportedly pursuing free-agent infielder Alex Bregman, with predictions suggesting a potential six-year, $165 million contract.
Bregman, 30, has had a distinguished career with the Houston Astros, earning two All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger Awards, and a Gold Glove. He has been instrumental in the Astros’ success, contributing to two World Series championships. His offensive prowess, particularly his right-handed swing, is well-suited for Fenway Park, where he boasts a 1.245 OPS over 98 plate appearances—the highest in the stadium’s history for players with at least 95 plate appearances.
However, there appears to be internal debate within the Red Sox organization regarding this potential acquisition. Manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy are reportedly in favor of signing Bregman, while chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and other members of the baseball operations staff have reservations. Concerns may stem from Bregman’s declining OPS over the past three seasons, dropping from .891 in 2022 to .768 in 2024.
Bregman recently declined a six-year, $156 million offer to remain with the Astros, indicating his openness to exploring opportunities with other teams. In addition to the Red Sox, the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers are also considered potential suitors.
