Did Mike Tomlin consider benching Russell Wilson for Justin Fields during Steelers loss?

Following the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 19-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, their fourth consecutive defeat, head coach Mike Tomlin was questioned about the possibility of benching quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of Justin Fields. Tomlin responded that he did not consider such a change, stating, “Not really, no. Because our failures were collective. I just think, at this juncture, the most prudent thing for us to do is to stick with those who were on the field and work through it.”

Wilson’s performance against the Bengals included completing 17 of 31 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown, while taking four sacks. This contributed to the team’s offensive struggles, leading to increased scrutiny and calls from fans and analysts for a quarterback change.

Despite these concerns, Tomlin has expressed confidence in Wilson, emphasizing the need for the team to address issues collectively rather than attributing blame to a single player. This approach suggests that, for the time being, the Steelers will continue with Wilson as their starting quarterback as they prepare for the upcoming playoff games.
